Three long days to test client; examiner said it was instrument manufacturer's error, and the smell from examiner's continual cigarette breaks was too much.
APA member: YES
Recent past complaints: NO
Examiner gender: M

Client wanted himself tested, paid $350, relationship matter. He had been tested by other examiners in the past, was comfortable with the procedure.

Day 1: Examinee sat for hours as examiner tried to get his computerized instrument to work. He said it was the instrument manufacturer's fault, that their software didn't work with a newer version of Windows (NOT TRUE). Examiner said he spends more on equipment than other examiners do. The continual 'I will go smoke while it is rebooting' brought in the heavy smell each time examiner returned. After hours of unsuccessful computer tweaking in between smoke breaks, examinee was sent away.

Day 2: Examiner telephoned examinee, said equipment working, come now. Examinee arrived, polygraph equipment not working. After hours of more computer adjustments and continual smoke breaks, examinee left, still no exam.

Day 3: Test conducted around many smoke breaks. Client says the smell was terrible.

Clients, a husband and wife, complained about examiner's equipment and results.
APA member: NO
Recent past complaints: NO
Examiner gender: M

Husband was to be tested, fidelity issues. They paid a 'mobile' polygraph examiner $400 cash when he arrived.

As he opened his equipment, they were surprised it was not a computer as their Internet research showed to be the standard. It was an 'analog', the older-style pens and chart paper model.

Clients said that Examiner gave them the results separately-- said to have first told the husband that he 'didn't do badly', then told the wife that the results were 'inconclusive'.

Client says she called around for the best polygraph price in her area, asking for a 'relationship polygraph test'.

Choosing a man who said he did tests at his home, she went there and paid $300.

It was not a polygraph test. Only the fingers were wired. It was some sort of test that was now called a 'truth analysis' instead of the 'polygraph test' she had called about.

The person she did the test for will not accept the results of this unrecognized testing format.

Until recently, a lack of examiners was keeping the prices gouging-high ($1000-$2000) where other states are typically $200-$500.

Client says she went to police to ask for a polygraph regarding an assault/battery incident, but they said they could not.

Client says she paid examiner a very high price, money she needs for a car repair but that proving her truth had to come first. He had her write out a summary that included what she wanted to prove her truth on, and she assumed he would develop questions from it. He first did a 'stim test' where he had her privately write a number backwards using her left hand, then told her he 'heard her lie voice' when she followed his direction to lie about that number. He told her a story where he claimed to have had an 'epiphany' --Greek for a vision or realization from God-- at his age 15 about never lying to his dad again, and he asked her when she had such an epiphany-- this confused her, as she never had such a life event.
He told her he would need her to lie during the test on certain unrelated questions he would be inserting such as 'Did you ever lie to a loved one after you were age 15'. Testing began. Surprisingly, instead of asking her direct questions about the situation such as 'Did you strike . . .' or 'Did you push . . .', he chose to ask her indirect questions about the situation: 'Did you lie on this statement?', Did you tell only the truth on this statement?'.

Examiner is said to have told her that she completely failed all questions about the statement. Devastated because she says she was completely truthful, she is also upset that he did not directly ask her questions about the situation (research and other polygraph professionals have since told her that the 'statement method' is known to be less accurate-- other such data is also on this blog).

Warm-weather reminder for polygraph examiners

On hot days, many potential examinees have already sweated-out more water than they consumed, leaving them dehydrated.

This prevents proper gsr/eda at the fingertips.

Be sure to have a potential examinee drink a few glasses of water (not soft drinks) an hour or so before the polygraph examination. This gives the water time to go from stomach out to tissues.

Polygraph test prices getting more affordable in California

Polygraph test prices are getting more affordable in California, as examiners have less work due to the still slightly weak economy.

Those that haven't lowered their prices since 2010 are barely getting any work. Those that have become more consumer-price-friendly are getting the work.
