TV reality show polygraph tests: the reason some are more accurate than others
TV reality show polygraph tests-- the reason some are more accurate than others:
Because sometimes a TV polygraph is known as a 'Two-thirds test'.
Time is very limited on a film set;
On a thorough polygraph exam, instead of simply just scoring pass or fail at the end, during the final third of the test sometimes a polygraph examiner might want to 'dig deeper' on an answer that indicated deception. This end portion of the testing is known as the 'Post-Test'. This attempt to either verify the 'fail' or to determine if there was a non-lying outside cause for the fail (something other than lying), an examiner might mention that an answer was showing deception and then modify the question or use interview methods to finish the matter.
But on some TV shows, examiners are instructed to keep the fail unmentioned to the examinee and to NOT dig deeper; it is left for the show host to do the 'digging'.
Example: a wife suspects that her husband secretly has been engaging in homosexual situations. During the polygraph exam the husband shows deception when denying it. Usually, such results indicate that he was lying. BUT, sometimes, had the examiner been allowed to tell the examinee of the results, gentle further probing has been known to bring the admission such as a rape by a family member when a youth. Then, the question might be modified to "Other than what you just told me about, have you ever . . . ".
Such an admission is far more likely to occur when the examinee is one-on-one with an examiner than in front of a filming audience.
Secret: some 'TV polygraphers' pass almost everyone, simply because they don't want any dispute.

Complaint about a California polygraph examiner: odd behavior, and 3 1/2 hours test of wasted time
Complaint about a California polygraph examiner-- odd behavior, and a 3 1/2 hours polygraph test that used the first few hours to cause examinee to be sure to pass the test at the end
(No identifiers are listed. If you recognize yourself here, correct the situation for the future. Courtesy of Polygraph Examiners Of America, www.peoa.US )
Recent past complaints: YES
Examiner gender: M
The other recent complaint: this examiner is said to tell potential clients by phone that only he is a real polygraph examiner and that all other examiners in his area are 'charlatans' (his word) that callers would 'be fools to use'
Client paid examiner $500 to test a female roommate for theft.
Client said examiner was 'crabby' the entire visit.
Client said Examiner used Internet to translate the questions into Spanish for the examinee.
Client said that for first few hours it was mainly asking the female roommate over and over again, NOT hooked up to a polygraph, 'Did you steal the . . . . . ?".
Client said Examiner told them he was 'old' and was 'going to die soon'. Client said Examiner lifted his shirt and showed them a major surgery scar that wrapped around his body.
Client was familiar with polygraph and finally asked 'Isn't it time by now to hook her up?' Examiner is said to have gotten angry and said 'Don't tell me my job!'.
Later, what followed was asking the female roommate the same question for a short time while finally attached to a polygraph instrument.
Client felt that the hours of the same question over and over 'desensitized' the female roommate to that question, like hours on an assembly line, so practiced and beyond bored with that question that it would cause no body change if a lie occurred once actually on the polygraph. And possibly the anger caused him to side with the examinee.
A theft polygraph does not take 3 1/2 hours.

Polygraph clients: if you are going to be tested at an examiner's office, do NOT pay a deposit in advance by credit card!
Polygraph clients: if you going to be testing at an examiners office, do NOT pay a deposit in advance by credit card!
Other professionals (doctors, lawyers, etc) would never charge a 'deposit' in advance-- nor should a professional polygraph examiner.
RUN if a deposit is required-- it is an insult to the client.

Client paid examiner $500 to test her. She paid $300 by credit card to make the appointment, then the balance $200 cash on arrival to examiner's office. When she mentioned during the pre-test interview that she was pregnant, he refused to test her. He told her to go get a note from her doctor before he would test her.
Note: a senior examiner from the US Government's polygraph academy has stated: there is no medical reason not to test someone who is pregnant.
UPDATE: She was tested by another examiner. Client's husband was very satisfied with the results.
