The #1 sign that a polygraph caller will NOT really be hiring a polygraph examiner:

When the caller says "Price is no object" or "I don't care what it costs".

PEOA intake/closure records show that year after year, of these callers, 9.6 out of 10 do NOT have a polygraph exam done.

Usually, it appears to simply be a boyfriend using the threat of a polygraph to scare his girlfriend as she listens to his 'Price doesn't matter, I will pay anything' call.

Client says: She paid Examiner $350 by PayPal. She wanted to have herself tested to show her husband she is telling the truth. Examiner said he "usually is gone fishing but occasionally does a polygraph". Test was done in an empty room. Chair back was bent at a nearly 45% angle, it hurt her neck. Examiner said she failed the test. Examiner would not show client or husband what the screen looked like. Suspicious that the computer didn't even work, they asked to see the program-- Examiner refused. Examiner refuses to issue a report.

Boyfriend wanted client to be tested. Client said when examiner showed up after she did at the address Examiner had given her (which was a building that rented tiny rooms per partial day), he asked receptionist 'What room am I renting?' Client paid him more than other examiner quotes because she thought it would be a better test.  Did test, Examiner did not use the question wording that was asked for, Client says results were false, Examiner said a report was included but later instead only sent photo 'screenshots' that mean nothing to client or to her boyfriend. Now Examiner says a written report is another $100.

Paid $300 for the exam at Examiner's location. Has told Examiner that results report is needed within two more days or a refund is needed. Examiner says "I'm old-- I do slow mail only-- I don't know email".

Update: A one-page report finally arrived by mail. It said that Examiner 'used the Utah technique', used 'a 4-pen instrument' and 'used Polyscore'. It said that examinee 'showed deception when answering some of the relevant questions' but it did not say which questions were found to be deceptive. Client telephoned examiner, Examiner said 'a law' prevents him from disclosing which questions the examinee did bad on.

Update 2: Examinee was tested by another examinee, results were No Deception Indictated.

APA member: YES

Client wanted himself tested, paid $350, relationship matter. He had been tested by other examiners in the past, was comfortable with the procedure.

Day 1: Examinee sat for hours as examiner tried to get his computerized instrument to work. He said it was the instrument manufacturer's fault, that their software didn't work with a newer version of Windows (NOT TRUE). Examiner said he spends more on equipment than other examiners do. The continual 'I will go smoke while it is rebooting' brought in the heavy smell each time examiner returned. After hours of unsuccessful computer tweaking in between smoke breaks, examinee was sent away.

Day 2: Examiner telephoned examinee, said equipment working, come now. Examinee arrived, polygraph equipment not working. After hours of more computer adjustments and continual smoke breaks, examinee left, still no exam.

Day 3: Test conducted around many smoke breaks. Client says the smell was terrible.

Husband was to be tested, fidelity issues. They paid a 'mobile' polygraph examiner $400 cash when he arrived.

As he opened his equipment, they were surprised it was not a computer as their Internet research showed to be the standard. It was an 'analog', the older-style pens and chart paper model.

Clients said that Examiner gave them the results separately-- said to have first told the husband that he 'didn't do badly', then told the wife that the results were 'inconclusive'.

Client says she went to police to ask for a polygraph regarding an assault/battery incident, but they said they could not.

Client says she paid examiner a very high price, money she needs for a car repair but that proving her truth had to come first. He had her write out a summary that included what she wanted to prove her truth on, and she assumed he would develop questions from it. He first did a 'stim test' where he had her privately write a number backwards using her left hand, then told her he 'heard her lie voice' when she followed his direction to lie about that number. He told her a story where he claimed to have had an 'epiphany' --Greek for a vision or realization from God-- at his age 15 about never lying to his dad again, and he asked her when she had such an epiphany-- this confused her, as she never had such a life event.
He told her he would need her to lie during the test on certain unrelated questions he would be inserting such as 'Did you ever lie to a loved one after you were age 15'. Testing began. Surprisingly, instead of asking her direct questions about the situation such as 'Did you strike . . .' or 'Did you push . . .', he chose to ask her indirect questions about the situation: 'Did you lie on this statement?', Did you tell only the truth on this statement?'.

Examiner is said to have told her that she completely failed all questions about the statement. Devastated because she says she was completely truthful, she is also upset that he did not directly ask her questions about the situation (research and other polygraph professionals have since told her that the 'statement method' is known to be less accurate-- other such data is also on this blog).

On hot days, many potential examinees have already sweated-out more water than they consumed, leaving them dehydrated.

This prevents proper gsr/eda at the fingertips.

Be sure to have a potential examinee drink a few glasses of water (not soft drinks) an hour or so before the polygraph examination. This gives the water time to go from stomach out to tissues.

More proof: being a member of a polygraph 'group' doesn't make one better than a non-member

More proof: being a member of a  polygraph 'group' doesn't make one better than a non-member!

Recently, a long-time examiner in northern California conducted a relationship exam on a guy. The guy was the client, and he wanted his girlfriend to know that he had never cheated on her. Examiner is retired law enforcement, and had chosen to not join a polygraph group.

The client passed, no deception indicated.

But client's girlfriend spoke to another examiner, who said that since the client's examiner was not a 'member' of the 'group', there was "no way he did a good job". He convinced client's girlfriend to hire him to test her boyfriend on the exact same questions.

Results: client again passed.

Remember: an examiner can join a polygraph group the day he or she finishes the training course-- with NO experience required to become a member! Membership is NOT a badge of competence.

2015 already a good year for polygraph examiners

2015 is already a good year for polygraph examiners:

In the first 3 months of 2015, PEOA has already received more requests for examiner referrals than in the first 4 months of 2014! This is due to PEOA's steadily-increasing Internet coverage, with more than 200 websites bringing in potential polygraph work for members.

What a difference 10 years makes!

What a difference 10 years makes!

10 years ago: a large percentage of examiners refused to do relationship/fidelity/cheating exams.
Now: almost all examiners will do relationship/fidelity/cheating exams.

10 years ago: many examiners spent work hours gossiping and bad-mouthing competitors, instead of focusing on improving their own businesses.
Now: Post-recession, most of those gossipers are out of business, had to get regular employment. Those who had been  improving their businesses ten years ago are now the surviving examiners, with more work than ever before.

10 years ago: Exam prices on average were higher than now.
Now: Exam prices on average are lower than ten years ago.

Client's wife says Examiner asked her husband 30 questions, and other examiners told her no more than four questions could be asked. She is concerned that this helped him to pass.
APA member: NO
Recent past complaints: NO
Examiner gender: M

Summary per Client's wife: Says several examiners told her that only 4 questions be asked.

Lack of understanding on her part. Client was not asked 30 different questions. Client was asked a standard 10-question polygraph chart. That chart was conducted three times with a short break in between each chart. And when other examiners advised of only allowing 4 questions, they were properly telling of four R questions (there are 3 types of questions in a polygraph chart); as it turns out, Client was indeed asked only four R questions.

If a potential polygraph client uses these words, there will be no exam happening for this person

If a potential polygraph client uses these words, there will be no exam happening for this person:

(PEOA's 2015 Polygraph Marketing Report showed that if a potential client used a certain phrase when calling about an exam, that more than 9 out of 10 times that person did not eventually have a test done. This information only for referral-participating PEOA members).

Client says Examiner, pre-test, had him write a complete statement about his past infidelities. Then she tested him using the client requested questions, questions that had nothing to do with the data on the statement. He says she failed him on questions he was completely truthful on. He feels she was prejudiced by the unrelated written statement she had him write. He had used examiners in the past, none requiring the writing of such a statement.

APA member: YES
Recent past complaints: NO
Examiner gender: F

Update per Client: Examinee was later tested by a different examiner, who did not require such a pre-statement to be written. Examinee was found to be non-deceptive.

Summary per Client: Client had husband tested at their Brooklyn NY home. Paid $400 by card.

Already, first request for a 'fake pass' on a polygraph exam this year

Usually as the year gets into warmer months, requests come in pleading for 'help' to pass their polygraph test. Bribe offers sometimes are far more than the cost of the actual exam itself! Already in January the first request has occurred; and he wanted his girlfriend to watch the test.
